KEBA robots as a future-oriented teaching aid at the WIFI _2009-07-07
Since last autumn, KEBA, the expert in automation solutions from Linz, has been cooperating with the Austrian adult education organization “Wirtschaftsforschungsinstitut” (WIFI for short). As part of WIFI master’s patent course in Mechatronics, under the skilled supervision of a team of KEBA specialists, a group of four trainees designed a complete robot from scratch. On June 23, the course reached its conclusion with the festive commissioning of the robot. During the celebratory start-up, which was attended by KEBA’s CTO, Franz Höller, the WIFI Upper Austria CEO, Harald Wolfslehner, and Franz Luschnig, the Wittenstein GmbH CEO, the SCARA robot used its ink-jet spray nozzle to paint a logotype on a sheet of paper.
Having completed the WIFI course, the project group is capable of creating robots on its own, practical teaching having furnished the expertise required for the complete development of a robot, from the mechanical structure and the control and drive technology, to software design. All the necessary automation components were provided by KEBA free of charge, while the Wittenstein company supplied the servo-actuators and the planetary gears. The finished robot is now to be used for subsequent trainee groups as a testing and teaching aid.
As Franz Höller explains: “The WIFI development project demonstrated how advantageous the design of an optimized robot for individual problems can be. KEBA’s robot control systems are suitable for every type of kinematics and this means that solutions with a positive price-performance ratio can be found quickly and easily. Such answers are ideally matched to the application and thus serve to save costs. Moreover, in addition to robot applications, the entire process sequence can be completed via the control system. On the one hand, this ensures the best possible results due to the optimum interplay between the process and the robot movements. And on the other, operation can be centralized and thus considerably simplified for the end customers.”
