Modern HMI for Grinding Machines Reimagined

Precise grinding machines require flexible HMI solutions

An operator stands in front of a large machine and uses a swivel-mounted HMI panel for control. The system is designed as an industrial machining center.
WMT Leipzig develops high-end grinding machines with the highest demands for precision, process stability, and usability. In collaboration with KEBA, a flexible HMI solution was created that sets new standards in industrial automation.

Challenge: Maximum Freedom in Operation

WMT Leipzig GmbH is a young company operating in the technologically demanding market of cylindrical and centerless grinding machines. For the development of new machines, both an existing control panel and suitable HMI software were lacking. Available solutions on the market were primarily designed for turning and milling processes, offering only limited support for grinding applications—especially for centerless grinding. At the same time, access to all relevant NCK data was a key requirement to fully leverage machine performance.

The goal was therefore to develop a freely configurable, control-independent HMI that breaks new ground both technologically and ergonomicallywithin just ten months, in time for presentation at CIMT 2023.

Solution: Open Software Platform as an Enabler

With the AP 524 control panel, integrated KeWheel, and a consistent software-first strategy, WMT Leipzig found the right solution. The KEBA software framework enables complete freedom in designing the operating philosophy while offering high openness toward third-party technologies.

Thanks to support for JavaFX, existing applications, libraries, and interfaces can be seamlessly integrated and reused. This not only accelerates development but also ensures long-term investment security. A concrete benefit is visible directly in operation: probabilities of polygon formation during grinding can already be calculated within the HMI and used immediately for process optimization. This turns the user interface itself into an active component of quality assurance.

"Das gesamte Framework von KEBA ermöglicht es uns, unsere eigene Bedienphilosophie ohne Einschränkungen umzusetzen. Diese Art der Flexibilität und Offenheit kannten wir bis dato nicht.“

More Efficiency Through Force Feedback and KeWheel

Force feedback technology enables safe and precise operation directly via the panel. Especially for safety-critical functions such as start/stop, it replaces traditional hardware buttons while providing tactile feedback that reduces operator errors.

At the same time, this approach supports the trend toward “operation under glass”: the number of physical buttons is reduced, while clarity and flexibility of the user interface increase significantly.

The KeWheel expands this concept as a central, multifunctional input device. It can be used flexibly:

  • as feed override
  • as spindle override
  • as an electronic handwheel

Switching is context-dependent via the HMI, the PLC, or directly on the device. This allows a single control element to perform multiple functions — without additional hardware. Another advantage becomes apparent during setup: feed can be deliberately reduced to 0%, allowing operators to safely approach critical movements. This improves process safety and ergonomics, especially in complex grinding operations.

Software as a Differentiating Factor in Mechanical Engineering

WMT Leipzig’s approach shows that software is increasingly becoming a key differentiator in mechanical engineering. A powerful HMI is no longer just an interface — it is an integral part of the machine.

By combining an open platform, flexible visualization, and direct data access, new opportunities arise to make processes more transparent and to support operators more effectively. Particularly in high-precision applications such as grinding, such functions can have a direct impact on quality, scrap rates, and productivity.

Partnership on Equal Footing

In addition to technology, collaboration was also a key success factor. The partnership between WMT Leipzig and KEBA is characterized by openness, direct communication, and joint problem-solving. This close coordination made it possible to quickly define requirements and implement a functional solution in a short time.

Outlook: Further Development of the HMI

Several machine types are already in operation with KEBA technology. Together, the partners are currently working on a new HMI-based tool management system aimed at further simplifying operation and unlocking additional efficiency potential. Further projects are also planned to strengthen the role of the HMI as the central interface between humans and machines.

WMT Leipzig thus demonstrates how a company can achieve sustainable competitive advantages through the combination of innovation, software expertise, and an open automation platform.

Centerless External Cylindrical Grinding – Explained Briefly

What is centerless external cylindrical grinding?

In centerless grinding, the workpiece is not clamped between two centers but guided between a grinding wheel, a regulating wheel, and a workpiece support. This highly stable process enables high precision with extremely short machining times.

Why is this important?

  • High dimensional and roundness accuracy → crucial for high-end components in the bearing industry, automotive sector, general mechanical engineering, etc.
  • Excellent process stability → ideal for series production and tight tolerances
  • Gentle workpiece handling → no clamping, no pressure points, less scrap
  • Flexibility → different workpiece sizes and geometries can be adapted quickly

What are typical applications?

Tapered rollers, injector needles, universal joints, hydraulic valves, ball studs → rotationally symmetrical precision components, wherever micrometer-level accuracy is required.
