The police station is responsible for public safety in a municipality of around 10,500 residents. The team consists of 20 people: 16 municipal police officers, three public-space security officers, and one administrative assistant. The new building was inaugurated in October 2025.
The Municipal Police is headed by Elian Riquelme. He has worked in Lézignan since May 1998 and has spent his entire professional career there. As a result, he has an in-depth understanding of his team’s requirements and the potential challenges that can arise in the day-to-day management of weapons, ammunition, and personal equipment.
“Everyone is very satisfied, and no one has told me they want to go back to using a BIC pen!”
Too Many Keys, Too Many Manual Steps, Too Many Opportunities for Error
Before the KEBA solution was introduced, weapons management in Lézignan-Corbières involved a significant amount of manual work. Access required three separate keys: one for the main safe, one for the individual compartment, and one for the ammunition compartment. An additional access code was required to enter the armory.
Documentation was also time-consuming. Officers had to manually record the weapon number and model, the amount of ammunition removed, and the date and time. This process had to be completed both when equipment was checked out and when it was returned.
In day-to-day operations, this led to typical problems. Due to time constraints, logs were sometimes incomplete, information was forgotten, or incorrect data was entered. There were also technical issues with the safe and keys. One particular concern was that the specialized keys could not simply be duplicated if they were lost.
The police therefore looked for a solution that could meet four key requirements: faster check-out and return processes, reliable digital data capture, a complete overview for those responsible, and remote management of access rights whenever an immediate response was required.
ID Chip Instead of Keys: Automated Access to Weapons, Ammunition, and Equipment
After discussions with several manufacturers and a visit to the “Salon des PM” in La Grande-Motte, the Lézignan-Corbières Municipal Police chose KEBA. Key factors included the close collaboration with KEBA, a demonstration of the solution, and confidence in its technical implementation.
The installed solution consists of KeMas NET software and a weapon locker system with two columns featuring compartments of different sizes and functions. The solution is cloud-hosted.
The new process is straightforward: each police officer uses their own ID chip, which is already used to access the police building. The chip opens only the individual compartment assigned to that officer. The compartment stores the officer’s weapon, tear gas, baton, and team phone. Thanks to an integrated USB port, the phone can also be charged while stored inside.
This eliminates several obstacles from the previous process: there are no keys, no codes for employees to remember, and no need to enter information manually in a log. The software automatically handles the documentation.
Faster Processes, Fewer Errors, and Complete Visibility for Management
Since the system was introduced, the process has become noticeably easier. Equipment can be checked out and returned faster, while errors are reduced because all relevant data is reliably recorded digitally.
For those responsible for the system, having a complete overview is particularly valuable. The software makes it possible to verify whether weapons have been checked in or out when they should be. This gives management a new level of oversight and adds another layer of security to day-to-day operations.
Remote management of access rights and compartments is another key benefit. Access rights can be changed or revoked without having to retrieve physical keys or replace locks. For security-sensitive equipment in particular, the ability to respond quickly is essential. Today, the solution meets the police department’s core requirements: faster access, reliable data, and an automated log.
Team acceptance is at 100 percent - a strong endorsement of the solution. Digital weapons management is particularly effective when it both increases security and makes day-to-day work easier.
