With the installation of the 10,000th cash recycling system of the evo series, KEBA is celebrating a special milestone. The systems are in use at banks and savings banks across several European countries. The anniversary device – the 10,000th ATM – has found its home just a few kilometres from KEBA’s production site: at the newly redesigned Sparkasse Oberösterreich branch on the Promenade in Linz, which is setting new standards for the banking experience with its modern meeting and lounge areas.

A trusted partnership spanning decades

But the story behind this anniversary is about far more than a number. It represents a partnership that has been shaped by mutual trust, innovation and strong regional ties for decades.

The collaboration between Sparkasse Oberösterreich and KEBA dates back to the mid-1990s. What began with the first cash deposit and withdrawal machines now encompasses a broad range of modern self-service solutions – from cash recycling ATMs and the KePlus D10 non-cash terminal to the KeBin access system. Sparkasse Oberösterreich also works closely with KEBA on new developments and is currently supporting the AI-based assistant KeBob in a pilot operation. The focus is always on practical solutions for banking customers, employees and future-oriented branch concepts.

“What we particularly appreciate about KEBA is its innovative strength and close customer relationships. Short communication channels, direct contacts and proximity to production enable a partnership on equal terms, where solutions can be found quickly and developed further together.”

Developed together – successful together

Like other partners, Sparkasse Oberösterreich was closely involved from the development phase of the evo series onwards. During open innovation workshops, valuable hands-on experience was incorporated directly into the further development of the ATMs. This close dialogue remains the basis for the continuous advancement of automated self-service solutions to this day.

“We were part of the development process for this ATM from the very beginning. The direct exchange enables rapid feedback from day-to-day operations and ensures that the solutions are continuously improved. That is exactly what makes this collaboration so special,” emphasizes Simon Walchshofer, Head of Information Technology at Sparkasse Oberösterreich.

Especially for a cash recycling ATM used by hundreds of banking customers every day, practicality, ease of use and reliability are crucial. The evo series of KEBA ATMs was therefore consistently designed for reliable operation, easy maintenance and a long service life.

High availability as the key to modern branch concepts

The role of self-service systems in banking has changed significantly in recent years. While cash transactions were once frequently handled at the counter, modern cash recycling ATMs – which allow customers to both withdraw and deposit cash – now perform a substantial share of these tasks. In some branches, cash services are now handled entirely through automated self-service. This gives bank employees more time for personal advice and complex customer consultations.

“High availability and a high standard of quality are crucial for us. They provide the basis for increasingly offering cash transactions via the self-service area and giving our customers greater flexibility,” Walchshofer emphasizes.

From Sparkasse Oberösterreich’s perspective, one particularly impressive feature is the dual cassette technology introduced with the evo series, which enables the recycling of all euro denominations. The highly intuitive and, above all, accessible device concept, designed to make operation easy for everyone, is also viewed very positively. Another proven advantage is the high level of serviceability, which supports fast maintenance by technical and bank staff.

Modern self-service systems create more time for personal advice

The requirements placed on self-service systems have increased significantly in recent years. In addition to ensuring a reliable supply of cash, they now have to meet a wide range of demands.

“In the past, an ATM was a standard device. Today, many aspects have to be taken into account: security, accessibility, service, availability and customer experience. The device has to deliver on all of them,” emphasizes Janine Kohl-Peterke, Head of the Linz Central Region Market Area at Sparkasse Oberösterreich.

At the same time, personal contact remains a central part of Sparkasse Oberösterreich’s approach to service. “Routine tasks should be completed quickly, easily and independently of opening hours. The time this frees up is used for personal advice – wherever people need people,” Kohl-Peterke continues.

A partnership built on shared values

According to Janine Kohl-Peterke, the fact that the partnership has remained successful for decades is also rooted in a shared understanding of values:

“Customer proximity, passion and, at the same time, progress through new technologies. Traditional values combined with innovation – that is what connects KEBA and Sparkasse Oberösterreich.”

To mark the anniversary, the 10,000th ATM of the evo series was celebrated with a specially designed anniversary cake – captured in a commemorative photo that symbolizes what makes this milestone so special: a successful partnership that has grown over many years and is actively helping to shape the future of banking.

Jürgen Kusper, CEO of KEBA Handover Automation GmbH, is delighted: “The evo series of our ATMs is the result of many years of joint development with our customers. Today’s milestone therefore represents not only 10,000 systems installed across Europe, but above all the trust of our customers and partners. We are all the more pleased that the 10,000th device has found its home at Sparkasse Oberösterreich – a long-standing partner with whom we share a close and trusted relationship.”

For Sparkasse Oberösterreich, the anniversary device exemplifies the role of modern self-service technology in branch operations: high availability, simple operation and maintenance processes, and more time for personal advice. These are qualities that will remain crucial in providing customers with a modern banking experience in the future.
