Parcel lockers have become an indispensable part of everyday life for many people. They offer convenience, independence, and a reliable 24/7 delivery option. To ensure high utilization of the network, parcel lockers are often placed in public and highly frequented areas. Popular locations include residential neighborhoods, shopping centers, or commercial areas. However, these locations also require special attention and safety measures – particularly when it comes to protecting children. In this article, you will learn what needs to be considered in terms of child safety and how our loxmate parcel lockers, equipped with the KePol Child Safety program, are already setting a new standard in security.

The challenge

To accommodate a wide range of parcel sizes, compartments of various dimensions are necessary. Some of these compartments are large enough to lock a person inside. This problem is further intensified by the trend towards autonomous parcel lockers. To save energy, these parcel lockers enter a sleep mode after a period of inactivity. In this mode, the locker would not respond to a compartment being closed in order to immediately unlock it again. This presents potential risks if children, out of curiosity, explore a compartment and are accidentally locked inside. Smart safety solutions are needed to prevent such scenarios – and that is exactly where KEBA is raising the bar with the KePol Child Safety program.

The solution: KePol Lock Secure

Our solution includes a comprehensive package of measures designed to make parcel lockers as safe as possible. loxmate parcel lockers are equipped with these safety features as standard ex factory, so you don't have to worry about the safety of your parcel locker network.

The core idea behind KePol Child Safety is simple: the larger compartment doors only lock when the parcel  locker is actively being operated. This assumes that a user is present and can either prevent a child from being locked in or call for help.

In summary:

  • Compartments with potential risk remain unlocked when the locker is not powered.

  • Locking only occurs when a user is actively sending or receiving a parcel.

KePol enables this through Lock Secure, an electromagnetic lock that does not mechanically engage when unpowered. It only locks when actively triggered. To do this, the closing action must be detected and locking activated.

Your advantages

This solution offers several advantages:

  • Electromagnetic locks are generally more robust as they offer less surface area for manipulation or escape attempts.

  • They are also less prone to failure since they do not rely on components like gear wheels or mechanisms.

  • Safety is ensured even before commissioning or after decommissioning, as the compartments do not lock without power. This ensures safety throughout the entire product lifecycle.

In loxmate parcel lockers, all potentially hazardous compartments – specifically those above a certain compartment height near the ground – are equipped with Lock Secure.

Enhanced Safety Features

In addition to the locking mechanism, there are other features that contribute to the safety of loxmate lockers. All potentially hazardous compartments are equipped with ventilation openings to ensure sufficient air supply. So, even if someone were to become trapped despite all precautions, they would still have access to enough air.
