What is AFIR?
The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) establishes EU-wide requirements for the rollout and operation of charging infrastructure. It has applied since 13 April 2024 and covers, among other things, requirements for publicly accessible charging stations, such as payment, price transparency and technical interoperability.
What requirements apply from 1 January 2027?
From 1 January 2027, newly installed or substantially renovated recharging points must support vehicle communication in accordance with ISO 15118-20. This change applies to both publicly accessible and private recharging points. Existing recharging points are not affected until they are renovated. New requirements from 1 January 2027:
- Compliance with Type 2 connector standards (EN IEC 62196-2:2022) and CCS Combo 2 (EN IEC 62196-3:2022); ISO 15118-1 to -5
- Compliance with ISO 15118-20:2022
- Compliance with EN IEC 61851-1:2019
AFIR-compliant charging with the KeContact P40 / P40 Pro
The KeContact P40 / P40 Pro is equipped to meet the requirements that apply from 1 January 2027. In the ISO 15118 version, the entire KeContact P40 product family is equipped with a PLC modem. The upcoming firmware update 1.6.0 supports ISO 15118-2 and ISO 15118-20 in dual-stack mode, as well as TLS 1.3 and the required certificate management. With firmware update 1.6.0, the devices meet all the relevant requirements.
The update can be installed during initial installation or at a later date, either by a technician on site or via the backend. This also applies to devices delivered before 1 January 2027, provided they are equipped with a PLC modem.
We will notify our customers by email as soon as the update becomes available in December 2026.
